Given the current economic conditions, we were not surprised to learn about a recent conversation. This statement was overheard between a financial planner and the client:

“No, I don't have a strategy to get you from where you are... to where you want to be in the time frame you have given me.

To get there, YOU are going to have to one or more of the following:

1. You can save/invest more money.

2. You can cut back on your lifestyle spending.

3. You can get a second job.

4. You can start a business enterprise.

5. If you already have a business, you can get yourself in gear to become a better business person so your business generates more revenue and/or becomes more profitable.

6. Your spouse can go to work.

7. You can change your time frame.

8. You can lower your goals.

There are only so many options. We will focus on those within your control.”

Now, not all financial planners are this honest with their clients.  No sugar coating, just the unvarnished truth.
